These essays are the result of Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo's many years of studying and teaching Philippine literature in English. Some of them were lectures or paper read at literary conferences and are published in this book for the first time. As she has always been more interested in fiction than in any of the other genres-and most particularly the fiction written by women-the essays naturally reflect that interest. She regards these essays as notes toward an aesthetics of Philippine fiction in English: her contribution to the larger project-in which all Filipino literary scholars and critics are involved-the project of describing Philippine literature and defining its practices.

Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo has published six essay collections, three short story collections and one novel. Her novel, Recuerdo, won the Carlos Palanca Grand Prize. Tales for a Rainy Night, won the Manila Critics' Circle Book of the Year Award. And Five Years in a Forgotten Land won the U.P. President's Award for Outstanding Publications. But Hidalgo is also a literary scholar and professor of literature. Her Filipino Woman Writing is a pioneering study of the autobiographical writing of Filipino women. And Post-Colonial Philippine Studies, which she co-edited with Prescelina P. Legasto, is a landmark anthology of Philippine post-colonial criticism.
