This book is a first-hand account of life in an institution for the elderly. By living with the elderly during the course of his research, Dr. Somera is able to present an objective, oftentimes poignant narrative of the day-to-day existence of senior citizens separated from known nearest kin, dependent on charities and government subsidies, and apprehensive of an impending death. Dr. Rene D. Somera is an Associate Professor at De La Salle University (DLSU), Manila. He earned his MA and PhD in Anthropology and a Certificate in Gerontology from Michigan State University, USA. As a Research Associate of the Social Development Research Center, DLSU, he is Program Coordinator of its aging studies and services program.
