Globalization undercuts the economy of poor and helpless nation-states and forces them to adopt poloicies dictated by transnational corporate interests. The allocation, extraction, and utilization of resources are thus necessary for economic and political survival. But equally crucial is the need to examine and situate the political in the environmental theorizing and governance (here concretized by forestry management) as articulated by academics, cause-oriented groups, mass movements, and civil society.
