While many of us have read or at least heard about Rizal's letter to the Women of Malolos, these women have remained but names to us. Nicanor Tiongson has recovered them from history and given us lives and even faces to remember them by. We congratulate Dr. Tiongson for completing a book we have long wanted to write.
Nicanor G. Tiongson is the Dean of College of Mass Communication and a professor at the University of the Philippines (UP) Film Institute in Diliman, Quezon City. A direct descendant of one of the Women of Malolos, he was born and raised, like the Women, in Pariancillo, Malolos, Bulacan. He finished his M.A. and Ph.D. in Philippine Studies (Literature and History) at the UP Diliman. He has published pioneering books on the Philippine komedya, sinakulo, and sarswela and is the editor-in-chief of the 10-volume CCP Encyclopedia of Philippine Art. In February 1999, he was one of the 100 artists and cultural workers who received the CCP Centennial Award for Arts and Culture.
