The book examines the experiences of migrant Filipina domestic workers in Italy and the US through the lens of dislocations that they confront in migration and settlement. From the back cover blurb: The book is the first cross-national comparative study of the increasingly visible phenomenon of labor migration by Filipino women to first world centers like Rome and Los Angeles. Through extensive field work and interviews of these workers, Parreñas reveals striking parallels in the women's lives across settings. Parreñas's interviewees speak eloquently of their experiences of multiple dislocations, quasi-citizenship status that leaves them with only partial rights, separation from family, downward class mobility, and alienation.
Rhacel Parreñas is Assistant Professor of Women's and Asian American Studies of the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
